Designing for Learning in EMS Education

Description:
This hands-on session engages EMS instructors in designing and redesigning training with a focus on how learning occurs. Learning in EMS is defined by the ability to retain, retrieve, and apply knowledge and skills in clinical care. Through active exercises, participants will use principles from the science of learning to shape instruction, practice, and feedback in ways that improve performance.

Objectives:

  1. Define learning in EMS and describe the neurobiological processes that support durable learning.
  2. Explain key learning science principles, including cognitive load theory, retrieval practice, spacing, interleaving, and deliberate practice, and their implications for instructional design in EMS education.
  3. Describe the role of desirable difficulty in promoting long-term retention and transfer and identify strategies to incorporate it into EMS training.
  4. Redesign a lesson or curriculum component to shift from passive instruction to active learning using these principles.

This session will include pre-work consisting of a video and a brief reflective exercise, which will be sent out in advance.
